I am a huge baseball fan. On more than one occasion I have planned a story around a hero who is an MLB player. I really love the game, even when my husband tells me he is bored. (To which I reply, at least you are not freezing like we would be if we were at a hockey game, which is his sport of choice).
Anyway, unfortunately the playoffs this year are a little snooze worthy. All of the teams I hoped to see advance, lost. I’m a magical bad luck charm, what can I say?
At this point, I merely root against the Yankees. As long as they lose, I will be happy. (Yes, I am one of those people).
All of this is to say that I typically throw baseball into each of my stories. In my current WIP my main characters sit around and watch their favorite team while complaining about the manager of the team. This may be a little based on my real life distaste for my favorite team’s manager. Maybe.
When I first started writing, I tried to avoid this addition because I know that Nora Roberts does it a lot, and I didn’t want to be accused of somehow trying to imitate her style, though I do really love her books.
But, then I kind of got over worrying about what other people might think, and instead just went with my gut. What felt right? And usually, it feels right to throw in a little baseball.
