I’m in the middle of NaNo, hovering around the 25,000 word mark, I have a great many events planned for my characters, scenes I can’t wait to write. For once, I really don’t feel my middle is sagging. Things are happening! I just can’t find the words to write them.
Writer’s block, big time.
I’ve been at this for hours and still haven’t hit 1600, which is disappointing because I was hoping to get further.
In a last ditch effort to find some mojo, I decided I’d make a music playlist for my story. Many times, this helps, but it usually features much of the same music. A lot of James Morrison and Michael Buble with dashes of John Mayer and Norah Jones. So, in an effort to ‘mix things up’, I just opened ITunes and hit shuffle.
It played a lot of songs I hadn’t listened to in a long time, and though they might not relate to my story, it did something to my brain. Some words began to trickle out. A decent sentence here, a not so terrible paragraph there. Things weren’t flowing, but I was getting somewhere.
It’s something that I think is an easy writer’s block fighter that I often forget. Change it up a little. Maybe write somewhere different, or listen to different music, or sub long hand for typing… whatever, just make a little change. You never know what it might dislodge in your brain.
