Shake it Up: Poetry

I’m not a big poet.  I used to write angsty poems when I was in high school and college.  Some of which I even still like.  I enjoy reading poetry.  I could recite Whitman, Dickinson, Yeats, or Shakespeare.  Still, it’s never been something I turn to regularly as a writer.

Currently, I am teaching a creative writing class and we are working on a poetry unit.  Some of my students are such amazing poets, it totally makes me feel inadequate.  Still, poetry is a good fit for me right now.  I don’t have a lot of time to write, I’m waiting to hear back on some novels, and it seems a good time to stretch my writing muscles by trying something different… (and something that will NEVER see the light of day).

In my last post I said I was going to take a writing break in December, but a writing break for me isn’t not writing at all.  Now that NaNo is over, instead of writing little stitches in that novel, I’m going to try my hand at some different types of writing.  Not in hopes of publication, just in working on becoming a better writer, a more creative writer.  That’ll be my little break, my refresher.
